An Interview with Dr. Rowena Sobczyk

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death.

Hypertension is known at the silent killer because most people don't have symptoms and are diagnosed at the time of a heart attack or stroke.

JNC7 (Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure) reclassified what constitutes high blood pressure.  

Below 120 systolic and 80 diastolic is normal.

Prehypertension is 120-139 systolic and 80-89 diastolic.

Prehypertension is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease.  

Isolated systolic hypertension has been recognized.  Sedentary individuals have  30-50% higher chance of developing hypertension than those who exercise regularly.

Exercise in 10 minute segments is effective.  

10,000 steps a day is recommended- the average person takes 3,000.

Regular aerobic exercise has been proven to significantly lower blood pressure in people with hypertension. 

Weight loss, dietary sodium restriction, and adequate dietary intake of potassium help with hypertension.

DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), is recommended-rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.  

Resperate is FDA cleared medical device to treat hypertension.

Dr. Rowena is proud of her membership in the family practitioner organization.  Family practice was the first program that demanded re-certification of doctors every seven years, and is also leading in the field of electronic medical records and the medical home, which is a program that restores the idea of a house call.  She introduces Resperate, a breathing device that will lower blood pressure without the use of medication and "Ask Dr. Rowena".  "Ask Dr. Rowena" started in 2007 and is an online forum on resperate.com that allows her to answer people's questions about any medical condition.

Segment 2

The internet made it possible for people to take charge of their own health.  She and Dr. Neil Shulman wrote a book together, "Your Body Your Health" in order to encourage people to start taking care of their own bodies.  Dr. Rowena speaks about the use of the digital world, specifically e-mail, and how it is going to start to change the way medical practice works.

What Dr. Rowena is doing with email is not unique to her practice,  it is growing and slowly being accepted to more and more practices.  Different tools and devices can be used rather than email to improve the communication between patients and doctors.  The digital world is making it easier to give care to yourself and those you love.

Dr. Rowena Sobszyk

Dr. Rowena Sobszyk is board certified in Family Medicine. She practices in Atlanta, Georgia and can be found on the web at "Ask Dr. Rowena" on resperate.com, the most frequently visited hypertension community. She is the co-author of the patient empowerment book, Your Body Your Health. She received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and did her family practice residency at the University of Minnesota.
